There are treatment alternatives that aid in increasing retention and stability when
conventional denture therapy is in adequate in the edentulous mandible. The
implant-supported overdenture is an especially attractive treatment because of its
relative simplicity, minimal surgical trauma and economy. Existing complete denture can
be converted and maintain facial support with denture flange when moderate to extreme
alveolar ridge resorption is present. The implant-supported overdenture is supported by
both implant and mucosa and therefore fewer implants are necessary than for the
prosthesis supported only by implants.
Numerous studies of implant-supported over dentures in the mandible with good
results have been reported. Clinical studies indicate that overdenture treatment has a
good prognosis in the mandible.
Rehabilitation of the edentulous mandible with implant-supported overdenture is a good
choice of treatment.
